The future of spine surgery has made its way to Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson with the installation of the Mazor X™ robotic spinal surgical system. Baptist will be the first hospital in Mississippi where neurosurgeons use the Mazor X technology to pre-plan the surgery in a 3D environment and then execute with unparalleled accuracy in the operating room.
Patients with debilitating back and leg pain caused by spine deformities and degenerative conditions, such as scoliosis and slipped vertebrae with pinched nerves can be treated with the Mazor X™. The system is used for placing spinal implants in spinal fusions. A CT scan of the patient’s spine is uploaded to the robot’s guidance system to help surgeons determine a spinal alignment plan before surgery. The system also provides real time 3D verification during the surgery.

The Mazor X™ consists of a large touch screen serving as a surgeon control panel, a guidance system with a surgical arm and an integrated 3D camera. From the uploaded CT scan, the surgeon creates a customized 3D blueprint of the surgery before going into the operating room. Small incisions are made in the spinal area with high-level accuracy and in the exact preplanned location using the Mazor X™’s guidance from the surgical blueprint.
Neurosurgeon Matthew VanLandingham, MD, added that the system is particularly beneficial in the treatment of complex spinal deformity:
“The advancement of computer-integrated surgery with the Mazor X™ allows us to address challenging spinal pathology with greater precision, efficiency and accuracy,” said Dr. VanLandingham. “The system dramatically decreases the need for intraoperative x-rays, saving the patient from radiation exposure. Simultaneously, the system optimizes the placement of spinal instrumentation regardless of the severity of the patient’s spinal malalignment .”
