Every year the last week in April is dedicated to the laboratory professionals who perform the lab work ordered by doctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals. This year marks the 38th year to celebrate Medical Laboratory Professionals Week. These behind the scene workers perform vital testing needed to validate the correct patient diagnosis. More than 300,000 medical laboratory professionals do more than 10 billion laboratory tests each year in the US.
The lab has become a critical part of patient care. Knowledgeable people are needed to understand and report correct test results in a timely manner. A quick turnaround time helps decrease a patient’s length of stay. Patients are able to return to their normal routine sooner when primary care givers are provided the needed information to diagnose and treat the patient. This helps lower cost for the patient and the hospital.
Even though the laboratory is not a visible part of healthcare they are an important part. Doctors base their diagnosis and treatment plans over 70 percent of the time on laboratory results. Laboratory testing plays a vital role in the research of diseases processes and possible cures. Laboratory testing also promotes early disease detection and increases the chance for a more effective treatment.
Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is celebrated to thank these professionals for a job well done. For more information on Mississippi Baptist Medical Center’s School of Medical Technology click here. Also, for more information on laboratory tests go to http://labtestsonline.org.
