El tratamiento y control del insomnio dependen de su causa subyacente. El insomnio transitorio o intermitente podría no necesitar tratamiento debido a que sólo dura unos cuantos días. Cuando se necesita tratamiento, como en el insomnio crónico, éste podría involucrar cambios en el estilo de vida, medicamentos, y otros tratamientos.

El primer paso para tratar el insomnio es identificar y tratar cualquier problema médico o psicológico subyacente. El objetivo final es alcanzar un patrón de sueño normal y restaurador.
