Diabetes Management

The Nutrition Center offers a comprehensive outpatient diabetes education program. Our program is appropriate for adults and children with:
• Newly Diagnosed Diabetes
• Type I Diabetes
• Type II Diabetes
• Gestational Diabetes

During our education sessions, the following topics are covered:

• Diabetes Disease Process Overview
Definition of diabetes and the patient’s own type of diabetes, along with treatment plans.

• Nutritional Management
Carbohydrate counting, meal planning, menus, and healthy cooking.

• Medication Instruction
Insulin administration and medication action and side effects

• Physical Activity
Appropriate types of exercise and relation of exercise to blood glucose.

• Blood Glucose Monitoring
Frequency of glucose testing, target levels, HgbA1C goals. We provide a glucose monitor and instruct on its use.

• Acute Complications
Signs, symptoms, and treatment of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia; sick day guidelines.

• Chronic Complications and Risk Reduction
Discuss relationship between glucose control and long term complications.

• Preconception Care / Pregnancy Care
Relationship between glucose control and pregnancy outcome; teach glucose monitoring and target levels.
