Promise
A young woman aged 14-18 who demonstrates a commitment to high personal standards

Carrie Evans

Nominated by her school counselor Michele Ogburn

Michele says, “I am amazed at her maturity, stamina and drive to succeed. Carrie is sincere, confident, and maintains a firm sense of personal integrity. Carrie is a member of the Student Council, volunteers for many school projects, works 20-30 hours at her job and has maintained an “A” average for all of this school year. Carrie’s father passed away three years ago from cancer. A year later, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. I met with Carrie and her mother in August, and during this initial meeting, Carrie expressed her desire to graduate from high school early. Her mother explained later that she was very ill, and Carrie was trying to graduate before something happened to her. It was her mother’s greatest wish to see her daughter graduate. Unfortunately, she did not live to see this. I told Carrie to take as much time as she needed away to deal with her grief and I was very surprised to see Carrie back at school so quickly resuming her normal schedule. The sheer emotional strength that she must possess in order to continue her everyday life is awesome. When I asked her how she was managing, she simply replied finishing high school was her mother’s greatest desire, and she was going to do anything to achieve that goal."
