Prayers to Comfort You

The prayers and scripture readings have been carefully selected because in our experience, they provide a powerful resource in the critical aspects of hospitalization. However, these prayers are not intended as a substitute for a personal visit by a chaplain. If you are a patient and would like to receive a visit from a chaplain for prayer, scripture reading, conversation or counsel, please speak to your nurse who will contact a chaplain. If you are not a patient, you may contact the Pastoral Care Department by calling 601.968.5146 or clicking on the link for prayer requests.

May God bless you and may the sense of His presence bring you peace and strength.

Prayers in Difficult Times

Trust the past to God’s mercy,
The present to His Love,
And the future to His Providence.
St. Augustine

Dealing with Fear

“The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?” Psalm 27:1 (NASB)

While Experiencing Times of Doubt

O Lord, there are days when I am confident and at peace, but right now I feel as though I am walking on thin ice. I hesitate taking the next step for fear that the weight of my circumstances will cause me to fall. I call out to You but I do not sense Your listening ear. My prayers to You seem to go unanswered and I grow weary with doubt. I find it easy to be frustrated with my situation. I’m reminded of Jesus’ question to Peter after they walked on the water and Peter began to sink, “O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” Matthew 14:31.

O Lord, hold me up and help me to stay afloat. Keep me in the hollow of Your hand. Help me to remember Your steadfast love. When doubt rushes in like a flood help me to find refuge in the high ground of Your mercy and grace. I pray in the Name of Jesus, who loves and keeps me in spite of earthly circumstances. Amen.

Prayers for the Family

Thanksgiving for Becoming a New Parent

Lord, we are thankful that You have entrusted us with such a precious little one. We accept from You the responsibility of raising this child and teaching him/her of Your ways. Grant to us wisdom that we might lovingly teach this child right from wrong. Help us to be comfortable with whom we are so that our child might grow up and be self-confident – able to love himself and to love others. In all of our efforts, may this child know above all else that he/she is genuinely loved.
We thank you for the family that has given us life – for the family of which we are a part today – and for the family of faith to which we are called. You have provided these family structures to encourage us, teach us, guide us, and remind us that we do not travel life’s journey alone. May all that is said and done in our family bring honor to Your name.

Prayers of Thankfulness

Blessing for Meals

Lord, You are truly my provider and my sustainer. Thank You for the provisions You have given me. Use this food to nourish my body so that I might be strong. And just as you use this food to strengthen me, use me spiritually to feed those around me. Amen.

“I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.” Psalm 34:1-3

Thanksgiving Scriptures

“The Lord is my strength and shield. My heart trusts in Him and I am helped. Therefore my heart exults, and with my song I thank Him.” Psalm 28:7

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His loving kindness is everlasting.”
Psalm 107:1

Prayers When You Need…

“Those people will never be hungry again, and they will never be thirsty again. The sun will not hurt them, and no heat will burn them, because the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd. He will lead them to springs of water that give life. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
Revelation 7:16,17 New Century Version.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred…let me sow love.
Where there is injury…pardon.
Where there is doubt…faith.
Where there is despair…hope.
Where there is darkness…light.
Where there is sadness…joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled…as to console,
To be understood…as to understand,
To be loved…as to love, for
It is in giving…that we receive,
It is in pardoning…that we are pardoned,
It is dying…that we are born to eternal life.
St. Francis of Assisi

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
I John 1:8-9

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:31

This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the spirit of Jesus. Amen.

Divine Ability to Bring Peace: “He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; He breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder, He burneth the chariot in the fire.” Psalm 46:9

Living Under the Shadow of the Almighty: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God in Him will I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me, and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” John 6:37

“Casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you.” I Peter 5:7

O Lord, I have become aware of my sinfulness. I have also become aware of my overwhelming need for Your presence in my life. By faith I confess that Jesus Christ is your only begotten Son. By faith I confess that Jesus lived a sinless life and was crucified on a cross. By faith I believe that Jesus was buried and was raised from the dead by Your power. By faith I receive Jesus Christ into my heart and life and recognize Him as my Savior and Lord. Thank you for being my Savior and welcoming me into Your spiritual family. In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray this prayer. Amen.

Lord, I am so tired and weary and yet sleep does not come easily. I need the rest but I keep thinking of more questions and pondering various outcomes. Help me at this moment to place my trust fully in You. I give to You all that robs me of peace and complete rest. I confess I worry about things over which I have no control. I need reminding that true peace comes only when my life is given completely to You. With full assurance that You are in control, I will find the rest I need. Thank you for being with me all the time – whether I am awake or asleep.

Special Prayers

O Lord Jesus Christ:
In obedience to Thy holy claim upon me,
I give myself anew to thee this day;
All that I am,
All that I have;
To be wholly and unconditionally thine for thy using.
Take me away from myself, and
Use me up as Thou wilt,
When Thou wilt,
Where Thou wilt,
With whom Thou wilt.
Charles F. Whiston

Prayer Before Surgery

Lord You tell us to bring everything to You in prayer. Lord in this time of anticipating surgery remove all anxiety. During surgery guide the hands of the doctors. Be with the nurses, anesthesiologists, and all the staff, grant them skill and ability, use them as Your instruments to grant healing. Amen

Psalm 23

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
For Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
King James Version

Lord’s Prayer

“Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.”
Matthew 6: 9-13
