Physicians at Baptist may use minimally invasive techniques to treat some conditions of the spine. One common condition that may be treated is sciatica-pain, usually in the lower back, buttocks or hip, produced when the sciatic nerve is compressed or inflamed.
To treat sciatica, physicians may use a minimally invasive technique called microscopic lumbar disectomy. In this procedure, surgeons make a small incision-usually no more than 1 inch-to remove the disk fragment which is pressing on the sciatic nerve.
